Abstract
PURPOSE: Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) commonly occurs in men, but the pathophysiology and treatment are not clearly defined. The clinical efficacy of extracorporeal magnetic innervation (ExMI) was examined.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study of 14 patients with CPPS was performed between January 2002 and June 2002. All patients were treated with ExMI for 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, patients completed the National Institute of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI). The average scores of 4 subjects before and after treatment were analyzed.

RESULTS: In the 4 subjects, the average scores for pain or discomfort (p=0.02) and the total scores (p=0.01) decreased significantly after treatment. There was an insignificant decrease in the score for urination (p=0.20) and a borderline- significant increase in the quality of life score (p=0.05).

CONCLUSIONS: ExMI is effective in the treatment of CPPS. However, further study and long-term follow-up are needed before clinical application.
